If you do not qualify for Legal Aid, you may still qualify for free legal advice and/or assistance from a Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan program. Programs include:
Clinic Program
Provided you fall below low income cut-off guidelines, you may be eligible to receive assistance from an organized free legal clinic. Saskatchewan has a number of free legal clinics which operate throughout the province. Lawyers provide free legal assistance in all areas of the law to people who cannot afford a lawyer and do not qualify for Legal Aid. Income testing does apply. Lawyers at the clinics generally do not represent you in court, but do provide ongoing legal advice and help you prepare for court. Lawyers at a clinic may also refer you to the Panel Program for further assistance.
Panel Program
Following a telephone or in-person appointment at one of the free legal clinics in Saskatchewan, you may be eligible to receive further assistance from the Panel Program, provided your matter matches the expertise, capacity, and geographic availability of a volunteer lawyer. Our Panel Program consists of lawyers who volunteer to assist with cases on a rotating basis, without charging a fee. You will still be responsible for disbursements and any costs associated with a court action, however, Panel Lawyers will try to reduce these disbursement costs as much as possible.
Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan uses its best efforts to assist with matching referrals to a lawyer from our Panel Program, however, all referrals will not necessarily result in a match due to volunteer capacity and the nature of the legal situation.
Solicitor Program
For charitable and non-profit community organizations of limited means, this program facilitates matching lawyers and law students through the Pro Bono Students Canada program to organizations in need of legal services. Lawyers may provide legal advice and assistance to community organizations in all areas of non-profit law, including incorporation and by-laws, registrations for charitable status, employment matters, contracts and lease agreements. Through the Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan, lawyers may also conduct seminars or information sessions on topics such as board of directors' liability, privacy, and board governance.
Self-Help
Finally, you may also wish to research your legal problem yourself or represent yourself in court or at a hearing. In order to help you access the necessary materials, forms, and knowledge required to prepare your case, we provide a number of resources here.
Best of luck with your legal matter!
