Legal Services

Intersecting with the justice system can sometimes be a confusing and bewildering experience. Lawyers are trained to navigate the system, act as advocates and advisors, and are required to uphold the rule of law. They are integral to the justice system and hold positions of great responsibility. Lawyers are also obligated to adhere to a strict code of ethics (PDF).

Lawyers counsel clients about their legal rights and obligations and suggest courses of action in business and personal matters after reviewing relevant laws, judicial decisions, and the specific circumstances of each individual client. You may wish to access The Law & You section of the Law Society of Saskatchewan website to learn more. Lawyers provide valuable assistance, for which they charge a fee. You may wish to read informational articles on the legal system prepared by the Public Legal Education Association of Saskatchewan.

In recent times, access to justice has become a major concern. Severe budget cuts to Legal Aid combined with a widening gap between the rich and poor and the increased complexity of the legal system have meant that some members of society are unable to afford legal services. Lawyers volunteer their time and expertise by providing legal services pro bono to persons of limited means and many law firms in Saskatchewan have signed a Pro Bono Pledge (PDF).

If you find yourself unable to afford a lawyer and as you search for legal information and assistance, please consider the following programs:
